Rutherford, Clifton Police Nab Teen Trio Who Mugged Woman

CLIFTON, N.J. -- Rutherford and Clifton police teamed up to take a trio of juveniles into custody after one of them elbowed a 29-year-old woman in the mouth, knocking her to the ground, while the others grabbed her handbag, authorities said Thursday morning.

The victim was leaving the Delawanna Train Station after returning from work when she was attacked around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, Lt. Robert Bracken said.

Her assailants, all wearing hoodies, ran toward Main Avenue after assaulting the woman -- leaving her with severe facial injuries that required treatment, he said.

Rutherford police quickly joined their Clifton colleagues in saturating the area.

Clifton Officer Jeffrey Snyder spotted the three on Main Avenue and began chasing them as they split in different directions, the lieutenant said.

Clifton Officer Matthew Phillips later found a 17-year-old from East Orange hiding in a wooded area near the Wells Fargo Bank in Clifton Commons, Bracken said.

A Rutherford detective found the second suspect, a 14-year-old from Newark, near the train station while another Rutherford officer found the third, a 15-year-old from East Orange, hiding on the side of Route 3 near Main Avenue.

Police recovered the woman's valuables from one of the teens and in a nearby park.

All three teens were charged with robbery, aggravated assault and criminal mischief and taken to the Essex County Juvenile Detention Facility.

"All of the officers did an outstanding job with the quick apprehension of these violent individuals," Bracken said. "The Clifton Police Department would like to thank the Rutherford Police Department for its assistance."
