State Department of Transportation and PSE&G crews worked through the night to ensure the overpass and highway were safe.
The problem, authorities said, is a natural gas line that runs alongside a structural beam that was damaged when the pole struck the overpass, which connects Lyndhurst and Rutherford, just before 3:30 p.m.
The impact broke loose concrete and damaged both structural beams and electrical conduits under the bridge, authorities said.
Two other cars were involved in the crash, and two injuries that were reported weren’t life-threatening, Rutherford Police Capt. Patrick Feliciano said.
The overpass, which runs north/south “will be shut down until further notice,” the captain told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
How long the eastbound artery into Manhattan and Hudson County remains closed was anyone’s guess tonight.

Lyndhurst Ambulance assisted with patient transportation, Feliciano said, adding that his department got traffic assistance from: The NJ Department of Transportation, New Jersey State Police and Lyndhurst and Clifton police.
NJ Transit buses had to be re-routed and will continue to be until the overpass is re-opened, Feliciano said.
