The cause of the Ewing Avenue fire, reported at 11: 35  a.m., wasn’t immediately determined.

“All of the employees  were accounted for early on,” an emergency official told the PILOT.

The fire quickly escalated to four alarms, with a fifth department in reserve.

Firefighters kept several master streams bearing down on the flames Car Metal, a metal-working business, when the roof of the Ewing Avenue building caved in.

Hazardous materials experts from Bergen County and Garfield were on the scene, although it was unclear why.

Also there, along with North Arlington firefighters, were engines from Wood-Ridge, Moonachie and East Newark, with Carlstadt among those on standby.
