Prostitution busts part of the Meadowlands experience

CLIFFVIEW PILOT HAS IT FIRST: The Meadowlands brings more than sports and music fans to the area: It also attracts prostitution, said East Rutherford Police Chief Larry Minda, whose detectives have been posing as johns to make arrests, including three this past weekend.

Operators of the Homewood Suite Hotel helped investigators flush out a 24-year-old Belleville resident — identified as Chris Alicea — who propositioned one of the officer and was arrested on prostitution and marijuana possession charges, Minda told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Charged with promoting prostitution and drug possession were the alleged pimp, Charles Torres, 52, and an 18-year-old woman, Jennifer Marcia, both of Union City, the chief said.

Minda said this weekend’s action was the 15th such operation in the past two years — all with help from all of the area hotels. In most cases, the offenders placed ads in various media, then arranged sexual trysts with callers.

His detectives now routinely call the numbers to identify what’s happening where.

“The police department will continue its efforts to ensure that our hotels remain a safe place that both sports fans and families can visit enjoying a family friendly environment,” the chief said.
