An hour or so earlier, East Rutherford police notified Port Authority police that the distraught Asian man had been reported missing and was believed headed to the bridge. A comprehensive canvass didn’t turn up anything, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
Another driver summoned PAPD police after seeing the man get out of his 2011 Toyota Venza on the lower level’s westbound side around 6:40 p.m., he said.
Officer Jesse Turano, who has a history of saves, responded with Officer Brendan Mulderigg.
They found the man “standing on the river side of the railing in an agitated state,” Pentangelo said.
Turano reached over and grabbed the 175-pound man and the two struggled as Mulderrig held onto his partner as an anchor.
Fort Lee Ambulance took the man to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center after the officers got him to safety.
There was no immediate word on what troubled him.
(NOTE: A previous version of this story said that last night’s incident occurred on Saturday, Valentine’s Day. The Port Authority said it initially was mistaken and quickly corrected the error.)
