Detectives took Cristina Sidoti, 39, of Old Tappan into custody on Monday on charges of burglarizing several homes and vehicles from which purses and wallets containing cash and credit cards were taken.
She was being held in the Bergen County Jail when Carlstadt police issued a sketch on Tuesday of a woman who they said used a ruse of trying to rent a room when residents found her in their homes.
They charged her with burglary, wrongful impersonation, credit card theft and fraudulent use of a credit card.
Sidoti's bail as of late Tuesday was a combined $50,000. Rutherford police were expected to file additional counts, which would increase her bail.
A Carlstadt woman whose father is a retired borough police officer said the stranger walked into her house on Jan. 1 and was later seen going through a glove box in a neighbor's car.
Her dog alerted her someone "came into my house uninvited," the woman wrote on Facebook.
The woman said she caught her "ducking out the back door. I asked her what she was doing and she asked if I had the room for rent. Then high-tailed it down the driveway.
"Apparently she did not have the wrong house -- she just walked into ours."
Police in Rutherford reported a similar intrusion on Jan. 11. Again, she told a resident who confronted her that she was looking for a room for rent, they said.
