RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- A motorcyclist sustained a severe head injury when his cycle crashed on eastbound Route 3 in Rutherford.

"We still have some more witnesses to talk to, but it seems like he may have rear-ended a car after traffic suddenly slowed down," Police Chief John Russo told Daily Voice after the highway was reopened around 1 p.m.

The cruiser-style cycle crashed just east of Route 17 around 12:30 p.m. The rider, who witnesses said was unconscious, was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

State Police and Bergen County sheriff's officers, among others, joined Rutherford police at the scene.
