Cubuk, 18, is described by club officials as “an extraordinary young woman” distinguished by “sound character, academic achievements, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.
“Jasmine is an outstanding young lady who is excelling in school, is part of multiple teen leadership programs and is an amazing representative of the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield,” said Paul Casey, the club’s CEO.
The Boys & Girls Club of America’s premier youth recognition program, Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and club, as well as the ability to overcome personal challenges and obstacles.
It also encourages club members to reach their full potential through academic success, healthy lifestyles and community contributions.
A club member the past three years, Cubuk “does not hesitate to serve the community by volunteering with several organizations throughout Garfield,” club officials said in a release.
“Jasmine makes a commendable effort in lending a hand to friends and relatives in need,” they added. “She is a stellar student who takes the time to enjoy her education and is proud to be a part of the National Honor Society.”
Cubuk has a 4.0 GPA and hopes to study biochemistry at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
“Becoming a member of the Boys & Girls club of Garfield is the best decision I have ever made,” she said.
If she wins at the June 4 state competition at MetLife Stadium, Cubuk will compete for the Northeast Region Youth of the Year title — and additional scholarships.
Five regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C., in September, to vie for the national title.
The winner gets another scholarship, along with the opportunity to meet with President Obama in the White House.
Nearly two dozen Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey serve 85,000 children ages 6-18. as part of a network of 4,000 neighborhood-based facilities serving more than 4.6 million young people annually in all 50 states and on U.S. military bases worldwide.
The Boys & Girls Club of Garfield, established in 1959, serves more than 1,500 multi-ethnic children annually.
The goal: “To inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential.”
The programs emphasize leadership development, education and career exploration, financial literacy, health and life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and recreation, and family outreach.
