Tari Turpin of East Orange is charged with two counts each of aggravated assault and illegal weapons possession, making terroristic threats, risking widespread injury or damage (also known as reckless endangerment) eluding, resisting arrest and possession of illegal hollow-point ammunition.
Turpin and the victims apparently boarded a PATH train to Jersey City at the 33rd Street station on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan sometime after 5 a.m., the Port Authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
It’s unclear why, but Turpin got into an argument with the couple, believed to be a brother and sister.
Pentangelo said Turpin, who has a history of violent offenses, shot the man in the hand and the woman in the ankle with a Glock handgun he pulled from his pocket.
An early media report said the man fired back, but Pentangelo said Port Authority police hadn’t confirmed that account.
“There were many witnesses,” he told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Turpin, who was struck in the thigh — possibly by a bullet he fired — was chased and taken into custody by Port Authority Police Officers Dave Lennon and Patrick DeNardo at a nearby Pep Boys on Marin Boulevard.
He and the couple were all taken to Jersey City Medical Center with injuries that Pentangelo said weren’t considered life-threatening.
