Tammy Abboud, a 13-year department veteran, was sworn to her new position with six of her fellow officers during a ceremony Tuesday night in East Rutherford Municipal Court.
"She is a tremendous public servant and an example that we hope others will follow," East Rutherford Mayor James Cassella told Daily Voice.
Abboud downplayed her historic achievement.
"I wasn't even thinking about it," the Wallington native said. "I feel like I am one of the guys, so it didn't really cross my mind."
Along with Abboud, brothers Jeff and Danny Perry were promoted to sergeant as their father, East Rutherford Councilman George Perry Jr., looked on.
Also promoted:
- Sgt. Ryan Micci
- Sgt. Felix Ragozzino
- Lt. Mark Mehegan
- Detective Lt. Tom Berlinski
"It is a pleasure to promote such dedicated individuals who have served the people of East Rutherford so well," Councilman Michael Homaychak said.
