A 30-year-old West New York man was in the middle eastbound lane when his Nissan Maxima clipped the front of a tractor-trailer he was trying to pass between Route 17 North and South around 8:15 a.m., Capt. Patrick Feliciano told Daily Voice.
The impact sent the Maxima spinning across the highway, where it T-boned a Nissan Altima driven by 25-year-old Union City woman, Feliciano said.
An instant later, a Ford Explorer driven in the left lane by a 34-year-old Morris Plains woman struck the Altima, he said.
Firefighters extinguished flames that burst from below the Altima's engine, Feliciano said.
Both the Altima and Explorer drivers were then taken to Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in Secaucus.
The Maxima driver didn't require hospitalization, the captain said.
One lane of the highway on each side remained open for about 45 minutes while the wreckage was cleared.
Rutherford police, firefighters and the First Aid-Ambulance Corp. responded along with Carlstadt and East Rutherford police, Feliciano told Daily Voice.
