Tereek Davis lay in wait for the woman, who believed that he was at work when she returned home Friday afternoon following an argument earlier that day, Police Chief Thomas Nielsen said.
After being attacked, the woman ran outside and flagged down a passing motorist in the area of Hoboken Road and Monroe Street who took her to police headquarters, the chief said.
Officers from Carlstadt and East Rutherford found Davis soon after at a Clinton Avenue residence in East Rutherford, he said.
They charged him with aggravated assault and hindering. A court date was set for Thursday.
