Carlstadt license-plate reader turns up revolver, hollow-point bullets in Teaneck man’s car

CLIFFVIEW PILOT EXCLUSIVE: An automated license plate reader that picked off a car with an expired registration on Route 17 south led to the discovery by Carlstadt police of a .38-caliber revolver and100 rounds of hollow-point bullets in the trunk.

Officer James Winant said he stopped the car around 4 p.m. yesterday and immediately spotted a small amount of marijuana in plain view.

After obtaining the driver’s consent to search the vehicle, Winant reported finding the revolver in the trunk, along with two boxes of the illegal ammo, Detective John Cleary said today.

“He said he bought the gun from a relative,” Cleary told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The driver — identified as Jonathan R. Agosto, 31, of Teaneck — was being held on $25,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with various weapons and ammunition offenses, as well as for having the pot and paraphernalia.
