An undetermined number of children 6 years and under were at the Rutherford Child Care Center when workers in the three-story brick building at 270 Union Avenue found the 18-inch cylinder, about two to three inches in diameter, around 2 p.m. Monday.
It had “60mm mortar” written on top,” Detective Lt. Patrick Feliciano told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
“The entire building was evacuated along with adjacent residential homes and the day care center was advised to remain in the basement area as a precaution,” Feliciano said.
A call is in to the bomb squad to determine what the tube was made of and what was done with it.
