Bergen road closures clog smaller arteries

Traffic continues to swell, particularly on roads that have become detours, as the hangover from Sandy continues: 9W is closed in both directions south of the Esplanade in Alpine because of a downed tree, while a downed pole has blocked Paterson Plank Road in East Rutherford in both directions.

On the flip side: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has reopened the George Washington Bridge, the Outerbridge Crossing and the Bayonne and Goethals bridges.

The entire length of the Garden State Parkway was re-opened this morning. Howeer, the toll-free ride ended at 2 o’clock.

Downed wires have closed the Route 46 extension of the New Jersey Turnpike in Ridgefield Park in both directions.

Route 17 also has a few closures, according to the New Jersey State Police. They include both directions at Orient Way and at East Union Avenue, both in Rutherford.

Route 208 northbound north of Ewing Avenue in Franklin Lakes was also closed.

Same for Bergen Boulevard in Fort Lee.

Downed poles were to blame in both, as on Main Street in Fort Lee.

Scores of stores remain closed, including along Routes 3 and 23 in Passaic County.

“Almost everything is closed EXCEPT the Home Depot in Totowa and the Home Depot and Lowes in Riverdale,” one motorist reported. “There are 3-4 gas stations open with 20-30 cars in line at each AND three groceries–the A&P in Totowa, a Shop Rite in Pequannock and another one I forget.

“The Monarch Diner on 23 is open with no power but serving burgers and eggs from the grill. And there is an equipment rental place open in Pequonnock. But because the traffic lights are out, the cops have blocked all of the left turns, so you have to drive way past 287 up to West Milford to turn around.”

A string of downed trees and lines has blocked Closter Dock Road (County Route 502) in Alpine and Closter.

Meanwhile, Grove Street in Ridgewood (below) remained closed between South Van Dien Avenue and Prospect Street due to a damaged utility pole in the vicinity of South Irving Street.
