A sought-after chef, DeMatteo began his career at the Hotel Douglas in Newark back in the 1920s, and he continued at various Italian restaurants in northern New Jersey.
In addition to being an avid golfer, he was a member of the Nutley AMVETS and an active member of the Rutherford Bible Chapel. He cooked countless meals for both organizations after he retired.
DeMatteo is survived by his children, Katherine DeMatteo, Gerard DeMatteo and his wife Mickie, and Marianne Chicola and her husband Timothy; grandchildren Dana, Lauren, Stephanie, Suzanne, Kaitlin, Emily, Hannah and Caroline; and great-grand-children Alexandra, Isabella, Jack and Jayce.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ida DeMatteo, and grandson Joseph.
Visiting hours will be from 4-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Rutherford Bible Chapel, 161 W. Passaic Ave., in Rutherford, with an 8 p.m. memorial service. A funeral, for immediate family, will be held on Thursday. Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, in Rutherford, is assisting with arrangements.
