RUTHERFORD, N.J. – John "Jack" Morris Crook, of Rutherford, died Friday, Feb. 19. He was 99.
He was born in London, England, and came to the United States when he was 9 in the captain's care of the SS Olympia to reunite with his father, Morris Ashby Crook, at Ellis Island.
He originally settled in Jersey City, where he met his wife, Florence H. Crook (Roder), and moved to Rutherford in 1939. He was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Navy from 1941-45.
He was a third-generation printer/linotype operator and proofreader and ended his career at the New York Times in 1977. He also repaired Plectrons and serviced radios for the Rutherford police and fire departments in his spare time.
He was predeceased by his wife, Florence, after 68 years of marriage.
He is survived by his sons John P. Crook and his wife Millie, Howard A. Crook and David W. Crook and his wife Susan; grandchildren Michael J. Crook, David Ashby Crook, Jason Paul Crook, John Peter Crook, Brian Ashby Crook, Erin Courtney Crook-Scheriff and Amanda Albino Crook; and 10 great-grandchildren.
