"He was a really friendly guy," Don Bozzone told Daily Voice. Bozzone is an active member of the Greyheads, the older regulars who volunteer with Bergen County Habitat for Humanity.

"Everyone liked him," Bozzone added. "He was a really hard worker."

A Navy veteran, Reuter and his bride of one year moved to Rutherford, where they raised their children and lived for several decades.

"Julius was a very kind man who always offered a helping hand to his neighbors and friends," information from the funeral home noted. "He volunteered for the Bergen County Habitat for Humanity for over eight years."

"We are the heart and soul of Bergen Habitat," Bozzone said of the Greyheads.

"We're there every Wednesday," he said, and they do a lot of the skilled work, as Habitat builds houses up from the foundation.

Reuter volunteered outside of Habitat as well, Bozzone explained.

Working on one Habitat project, they had met a Franciscan nun who wanted to open a center in Fairview to help people in the neighborhood. A church provided a building and Bozzone, Reuter and others helped provide the manpower to get the center going.

"He worked there a lot more than I did," Bozzone said. And it's now grown, housing a food bank and more.

Reuter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan; son Julius Reuter III and his fiancé Penni Leichty; and daughter Beth Evenson and her husband Kirk. He was preceded by his parents, parents, Julius and Lena Reuter.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, March 24, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Ave., in Rutherford. The funeral will be on Saturday, gathering at the funeral home at 9 a.m. for a 10 a.m. service, followed by interment in Crest Haven Cemetery, in Clifton.
