Elizabeth 'Betty' Sass, 89, Lifelong Carlstadt Resident

CARLSTADT, N.J. -- Elizabeth "Betty" (Bobacher) Sass, a lifelong resident of Carlstadt, died on Wednesday, May 25. She was 89.

Sass was a homemaker and loved to cook, bake, knit, crochet and sew. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carlstadt, where she was a deacon, elder, clerk of session, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Women's Association, Ladies Aid Society and the choir.

Sass was a member of the Carlstadt Woman's Club for over 47 years, participating in the Book Club and winning several creative writing awards. She was also a member of the Carlstadt Senior Friendship Club, Friends of the Library, Carlstadt Historical Society, Eastern Star -- Eclipse Chapter, Daughters of the Nile and the Carlstadt Mothers' Club.

She is survived by her children, Steven Sass and his wife Patricia, Lawrence Sass Jr. and his wife Alice, and Katherine Sass; grandchildren Steven Sass Jr. and his wife Lynn, Jacqueline Witkowski and her husband Brian, Dr. Alison Sass and Stephanie Sass; and great-grandchildren Rebecca Sass, Lauren Sass, Madeline Glanville and Brian Witkowski.

Sass was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Lawrence "Brud" Sass Sr.

Visiting hours will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, May 27, at the Kimak Funeral Home, 425 Broad St., in Carlstadt. The funeral service will be held on at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church of Carlstadt, with Pastor Donald Pitches officiating. Interment will be in Crest Haven Memorial Park, in Clifton.
