East Rutherford D.A.R.E. Officer Anthony 'Tony' Capelli, 73

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Anthony J. “Tony” Capelli, a former police officer, died Thursday, Jan. 19, in East Rutherford. He was 73.

Capelli, formerly of Jersey City, retired as a police officer in the borough in 2004.

Capelli was a member of the East Rutherford P.B.A. Local 275 and the Honor Legion. He also was a traffic officer, instructor at the police academy and former D.A.R.E. officer.

Prior to that, he was a barber in Jersey City, where he had a shop called Mr. Anthony's for several years.

Capellli was a founder of the East Rutherford Neighborhood Watch Program and founder of the East Rutherford National Night Out.

He was an avid billiards player.

In a Facebook post, East Rutherford Chief Larry Minda announced Capelli's passing saying that he had served the borough for more than 25 years.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the Capelli family," Minda wrote.

Capelli is survived by his wife, Patricia (nee Ciarkowski) Capelli; two daughters, Christine Ann Rotondo (Michael) and Courtney Rose Calacione (David); two grandchildren, Anthony and Valerie; a brother, Paul Capelli (Annamarie) and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being handled by the Kimak Funeral Home, 425 Broad St., Carlstadt.

Departure for the services will be 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, from the funeral home.

The funeral itself starts at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, East Rutherford.

Cremation will take place at East Ridgelawn Crematory, Clifton.
