It is slated to be the largest indoor theme park in the Western Hemisphere, sprawling over 8.5 acres. It will have rides and attractions based on Nickelodeon's iconic properties, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and new hits like Blaze and the Monster Machines.
"Based on the success we have seen with Nickelodeon Universe at Mall of America we are excited to bring the number-one entertainment brand for kids to American Dream," said Don Ghermezian, president of Triple Five, the project developer.
In addition to rides, the planned theme park will also have live shows, games, food establishments and themed party rooms.
The mega mall will also feature a Sea Life aquarium and Legoland Discovery Center complex, a 16-story indoor ski slope, a Cinemex movie theater, a variety of retail shops and more.
Proposals to develop the site were first sought in 2002, and the proposal for "Xanadu" was accepted in 2003. The project hit a number of bumps, including environmental issues and lawsuits. Triple Five took over in 2010.
