Rutherford Boy Scout Completes Labyrinth For Local Church

RUTHERFORD, N.J. — It took 220 total hours and $1,200, but Grace Episcopal Church in Rutherford has a brand new labyrinth on its lawn, thanks to 15-year-old Boy Scout Thomas Nowoslawski.

"I'm relieved," Nowoslawski's mother, Diana, told Daily Voice. "None of us thought this would be as big a project as it turned out to be.

"But he got it done and it looks beautiful, and I am very proud."

Thomas decided to build a labyrinth for his Eagle Scout project back in December. It took him four days to dig up the yard outside the West Passaic Avenue church. He then raised over $1,200 at a clothing drive to buy the bricks and hire a mason to lay stone.

He finally completed the 26-by-24-foot labyrinth on Sunday, more than three months after he put the first shovel in the ground.

"The fact I got it done in time for Holy Week makes it even more special," Nowoslawski told Daily Voice. "It is beautiful and adds a new spot of peace and serenity to the church property."

A labyrinth is a spiritual walkway that winds back and forth until it arrives at a center point. Labyrinths have a meditative quality to them and can represent the journey to the center of oneself.
