CDC: COVID Vaccinated Students, Teachers Don't Need To Wear Masks In Classroom
Fully vaccinated teachers and students do not have to wear masks while in the classroom starting this fall under brand-new COVID-19 guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released on Friday, July 9. The updated recommendation comes as more than 55 percent of the United States' population has received at least one vaccine dose, including more than 47 percent who are fully vaccinated. Children under the age of 12 are not currently eligible to receive any of the three COVID-19 vaccines in the nation. The CDC's updated guidance recommends that individuals who are no…

North Jersey School Districts Across County Lines Will Share Same Superintendent
A high school isn't the only thing Bloomingdale and Butler will be sharing. Starting Jan. 1, the two districts will share the same superintendent, ending Bloomingdale's longtime search. Dr. Daniel Johnson made the announcement to both "learning communities" in Passaic and Morris counties on Wednesday. "Butler and Bloomingdale have had a relationship for the better part of the past 100 years, and it is logical for the districts to begin to share services for the best interest of students and staff," said Johnson, who was hired in Butler in 2018. "Starting today, we redefine our longs…

19: More Bergen, Passaic County Schools Go Remote
Several schools in Bergen and Passaic counties made the switch to online learning due to a number of positive cases. In Maywood, two different teachers in the Memorial School tested positive, according to a letter sent by district Superintendent Michael Jordan Nov. 24. The school is closed out of an abundance of caution from Nov. 25 through Dec. 7, Jordan said. All Dumont schools went virtual on Nov. 20 and will resume in-person learning on Dec. 7 due to "a number of reported cases [and] the shortage of available staff," the district said. The switch came after one person tested positive …

Air Filter Issues Delay Classroom Learning For Essex County School District
Air filter issues are keeping Essex County students out of the classroom. Vents in each classroom in the Maplewood-South Orange School District should have been updated with filters containing a Merv 16 rating, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Donald Taylor said Tuesday, Oct. 27. The filters were never installed, though. "Our thorough investigation revealed that while much work toward the reopening of our schools was completed (removal of carpet, installation of hand sanitizer stations, mitigation of signage, plexiglass installation, etc.) an important component was not completed, despit…

19: Morris County District Delays Classroom Learning Until 2021
Some students in one Morris County district will have to wait until 2021 before they can return to in-person learning. Students in grades six through eight at the John Hill School and Boonton High School students can return Feb. 1, while K through 5th grade students can start on Jan. 19, Boonton Public Schools Superintendent Robert Presuto said. In-person learning will resume on a hybrid schedule, he said. Presuto in an email sent Wednesday night said a "sizable portion" of teachers refused to return over COVID-19 fears. There were also not enough substitute teachers to make…

19 Closes Paterson Schools Until January
Paterson schools will remain closed for in-person learning until January. The district's Board of Education on Wednesday passed a resolution to extend in-person learning until Jan. 19. “Given the predominant local pandemic conditions, we cannot in good conscience, allow school buildings to reopen at this time,” Board of Education President Kenneth Simmons said. “I thank the district administration for their due diligence in gathering the data to enable the Board Commissioners to make an informed, scientifically-based decision that is in the best interests of Paterson Public Schools s…
