A helicopter pilot was killed while crash-landing on the roof of a building on 7th Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets in Manhattan Monday afternoon, authorities confirmed. Authorities initially launched a mass casualty response after the chopper apparently tried to make an emergency landing in the rain and fog atop the financial building near Times Square around 1:45 p.m. However, the NYPD later reported that only the pilot -- identified as Tim McCormack of Clinton Corners in Dutchess County, NY -- was the only victim. NJ Man Jammed Newark Airport GPS Signals, FCC Says
The Federal Communications Commission has issued a stern warning to a New Jersey man who allegedly used an electronic device that jams GPS signals. The warning? Knock it off. Now. According to the FCC, the agency received a complaint March 28 from another federal regulatory agency, the FAA, that the GPS system at Newark Liberty International Airport had experienced "harmful interference." Union Police Adding Drone Unit, Joining A Growing Number Of Departments
The Union Police Department has become the latest law enforcement agency to employ drones in public safety work, the agency announced Wednesday. The UPD's Drone Unit will be called in on search and rescue operations, especially for missing children and elderly people, providing vital assistance for nighttime searches. The small, flying craft will also be used in accident investigations and in searches for suspects when appropriate, the department said in a statement. Capt. Although some experts called it highly unlikely – primarily because of the weather – the FAA said a pair of drones were spotted flying 3,500 feet over Teterboro Airport, bumping flight times there and at Newark Liberty International Airport. UPDATE: In a random coincidence, a teacher featured in a PBS special about aviation this past week was involved in an emergency landing at the Paramus Golf Course early Sunday afternoon. Three minor injuries were reported after the 1984 fixed-wing, single-engine Mooney M20K made an emergency landing around 12:30 p.m. on the fairway of the 9th hole off Paramus Road. WEST MILFORD, N.J. – The pilot died in a small plane crash that ignited a fire Wednesday afternoon in a wooded area of West Milford that was once part of the former Jungle Habitat theme park, authorities confirmed.
