Streets were closed as fire crews were battling a two-alarm blaze at a veterans association in Morris County, authorities said. The blaze broke out at 210 Espanong Rd. in Lake Hopatcong shortly before 10:50 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, according to the Sparta Township Fire Department. The address appears on Google as the location of the American Legion U.S. veterans association. Additional crews were called to the scene following a partial building collapse, initial reports said. Firefighters are quick to rescue those in need, but right now one of Park Ridge’s bravest could use some help. Park Ridge Firefighter Mark "Cookey" Eisen, 63, was recently placed on the National Kidney Registry after diabetes caused late-stage kidney failure. He’s scheduled to begin dialysis in 2021 but hopes to find him a kidney before then. A veteran of seven years with the U.S. Navy, Eisen has been a borough firefighter for nearly three decades. Seven protestors including the event's organizer were arrested during a Black Lives Matter march through Atlantic City streets, which the city's mayor called "selfish and clownish" after futile attempts to postpone it. Funeral Set For Bergen WWII Vet, Longtime Firefighter Al Knaub
A funeral Mass will be held this weekend for one of Bergen County's last World War II veterans, Albert S. Knaub, a 65-year member of the Ridgefield Park Fire Department who was recalled with great fondness and respect during the village's Fourth of July parade.
