RIDGEWOOD, N.J. – The building that once housed the original playhouse in Ridgewood is filling with music once again.
“We are bringing music back to the playhouse,” said Sonia Kiernan, a Paramus native who along with her husband John recently opened the Piano Workshop at Bergen County.
“This is where many plays were performed as well as musicals and a lot of musical events happened here,” Sonia said, as she and John sat in the lobby of their music school at 10 Wilsey Square in downtown Ridgewood.
“A lot of people who live in Ridgewood also know the history of Ridgewood … Everyone has been really happy with there being a music school here now,” John said.
The school has seven teachers and offers private lessons in piano, guitar, voice, percussion and cello. It also features a music technology program where kids can learn about recording their own music, and use technology to help them learn to play instruments.
Sonia and John, who live in Hackensack, said they have both been interested in music since early childhood. They both studied music in college and have performed domestically and internationally, they said.
“The teachers that we hire also have a high level of performance experience,” John said.
One of their voice teachers is Broadway singer Donna Vivino, a Fair Lawn native who starred as Elphaba in Wicked.
All of the school’s teachers love music and love what they do, Sonia said.
“We all have a great interest in our students and in teaching and really creating a great school, a great environment for people to learn,” she said.
“We want to inspire kids to explore their creativity,” John said. “And we want to keep that passion that we have, and that love for music that we have and we want to transfer it to our students.”
The Piano Workshop at Bergen County is the Piano Workshop's second location. There is also a school in Chester.
