Aronsohn and a majority of the Village Countil last month voted in favor of a 400-space deck on Hudson Street.
Response by members of Mount Carmel Church, across the street from the deck's proposed site, convinced him to change his mind, the mayor said.
"[S]ome said that the 400-space parking deck would be too big relative to the Church; some said that it – more than the smaller options -- would require 'unwanted' changes to on-street parking and traffic flows," Aronsohn said in a statement released Monday night.
Aronsohn said he still thinks the large deck makes more sense but is now pressing for the smaller facility "in the interest of finding common ground" with the community.
Traffic consultants for the village and the church should continue to work toward what makes the most sense for the neighborhood, he added.
The village council is set to vote tomorrow on a bond ordinance to finance the structure, which is expected to cost roughly $10 million.
Aronsohn said the council "should move forward" with the adoption of the bond ordinance, and that the village could seek financing from the Bergen County Improvement Authority as an alternative.
"We can and should – by the end of this year -- build a parking deck that would be welcomed, celebrated and used by Ridgewood residents from throughout our entire community," the mayor wrote.
