Absent from the state 72 percent of the time in 2015, Christie "has made it abundantly clear that governing New Jersey is a distant second priority for him, far behind the demands of his personal ambition," the Star-Ledger Editorial Board writes.

"In any other job, he would have been fired long ago," it says in the editorial, entitled "Chris Christie, resign for N.J.'s sake."

If "his first term showed that he has the talent, his second term has shown that he lacks the character" to find ways to change the state's fortunes, the editorial says.

The board cites Christie's inaction as both Atlantic City and the state transit system headed toward bankruptcy and the fiscal crisis became the second-worst in the U.S. It says he also has lied or flip-flopped when hit comes to guns, immigration, the state budget and more.

"His craven endorsement of Donald Trump is only the final blow, the moment when he lost any last shred of credibility," the board writes.
