The 26-mile Run For Hope Foundation run/bike will begin at 7:45 a.m. Sunday at the village's Wild Duck Pond across from 1200 East Ridgewood Avenue. It's expected to reach the WTC memorial around 11 a.m.
Citizens are encouraged to join in either running or biking.
The course travels through Maywood, Hackensack, Bogota, Ridgefield Park, Leonia and, finally, Fort Lee, before crossing the George Washington Bridge. Then it's onto the river path along the Westside Highway before ending across from One World Trade Center.
"On this 15th anniversary on the attacks on our nation, it is important to remember there are people struggling with homelessness and drug addiction; especially veterans," said Del Vecchio, who is now the director of the Bergen County Communications Center.
"We need to work together to provide the resources and assistance to those in the greatest need and to combat poverty, homelessness and drug addiction," he told Daily Voice.
Already signed up to join Del Vecchio are Bergen County Freeholders Steve Tanelli and John Felice and officers from the Guttenberg Police Department, among others.
Through his national Run for Hope Foundation, Del Vecchio has helped families devastated by Hurricane Sandy rebuild, contributed to anti-violence and youth programs, and assisted organizations dedicated to finding missing children and helping victims of domestic violence.
