The young Springsteen, who turns 21 this summer, even changes tempo mid-way through “New York City,” a song that bears some of the rich lyrical imagery of “Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.” but sonically comes closer to Dylan — and, in the closing sing-along chorus, Pete Seeger.
The bittersweet “Sweet Georgia Brown” talks of leaving a former lover in “old New Jersey”:
“Everything I loved couldn’t leave with me. Everything I loved I let go. Sometimes I still miss her. Y’know, she never calls.”
He deserves credit for dropping the famous last name, although he’s certainly not fooling anyone.
And it’s certainly way too soon to start drawing comparisons to Jake, Sean, Justin Townes, or the Wainwrights. James Evan is still young and raw, but with a deep sense of traditional American folk music and lots to say.
