Following the thief’s directions, the Ponfield Place resident bought 60 iTunes gift cards for $100 each, then scratched off the backs and gave the caller the serial numbers, village police said.
The caller told the victim she “needed to pay immediately or be arrested,” Police Chief Jacqueline Luthcke said.
“She realized shortly thereafter the call was a scam and reported the incident to the iTunes theft department,” Luthcke said.
An iTunes representative told her she had to report it to police before the company would investigate, she said.
