"Fatal accidents have occurred in the past when signs are removed," Officer Steven Shortway said after a stop sign was swiped from the corner of Grove Street and Stevens Avenue over the the weekend.
The thefts, which have continued over the past several years, ordinarily begin in August -- coinciding with teens leaving for college.
Three years ago, more than 75 signs were stolen from village streets. Three dozen or so were taken last year.
Theft of public property is a crime, Shortway emphasized. Parents also can be held liable.
The village Emergency Services Unit posted a portable sign at Grove and Stevens until the Signal Department could put up a permanent replacement.
Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call Ridgewood police: (201) 652-3900.
Meanwhile, police urged motorists to be careful driving.
