One of the first similarities — as with nearly every vehicle break-ins — is that just about all of the cars were unlocked, Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward told CLIFFVIEW PILOT after no fewer than three car burglaries were reported overnight in the village.
All occured in the Ackerman Avenue area near the Glen Rock border, he said.
Residents reported seeing a person in a grey hoodie who appeared to be prowling. Some said he tripped motion sensor lights on Doremus Avenue. Hawthorne police assisted in the subsequent search, but no suspects were found.
This comes after at least 15 vehicles were entered overnight Wednesday into Thursday, most in the Byrd School area, Glen Rock police said.
Ward said the village and borough are working together while stepping up patrols.
He emphasized that citizens who don’t want to become victims should always lock their cars, put any valuables in a locked trunk if these must remain in the car and be sure not to leave a valet key inside.
The chief also urged people to use outside lighting and to call police the instant they see anything unusual or suspicious. Better to have officers check out something that turns into nothing, he said, than to be victimized by someone who could’ve been stopped.
