An off-duty New Jersey police officer was found shot to death in his personal car Monday morning.
Police found him dead of a gunshot wound outside what once was the Amboys Cinemas off Route 9 and the Garden State Parkway around 7:15 a.m., Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey said.
The nine-year veteran was off duty, Carey said.
"The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating with the cooperation of the Sayreville Police Department," a spokesman said in a statement just before 10:30 a.m. "There will be no further comment at this time."
