‘Handgun’ found in Ridgewood garden a toy

ONLY ON CLIFFVIEW PILOT: In today’s second area report of a firearm that was actually something else, a “handgun” found by a Ridgewood resident turned out to be a toy.

Officer Steven Shortway (above) was dispatched to a Bogert Avenue home around 9 a.m. after the homeowner called police and said she found the purported weapon in a bush in her front-yard garden.

Although the piece can’t fire real ammo, it apparently can shoot plastic pellets or other projectiles.

Shortway canvassed the neighborhood, found the owner and returned the toy.

Earlier today, NJ Transit police briefly held up light rail trains on the Hudson-Bergen line, although this mix-up was a bit different:
