Dakim E Nicholson had already left his Charles Street apartment when a neighbor called at 4:45 p.m. to say he’d returned from walking his dog to find a bullet hole in his wall and a spent 9mm shell on his bed.

After surrounding the building, Bergen County Police Department SWAT team members and Garfield police burst into Nicholson’s apartment more than two hours later.

He wasn’t there, Capt. Darren Sucorowski said, but city officers and members of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office found a .9mm handgun after a search warrant was obtained.

An investigation “revealed that [Nicholson] discharged the weapon within the apartment a nd the bullet traveled through the walls of his apartment through the walls of the neighboring apartment to the eastside of the building,” Sucorowski said.

Shortly after 3 a.m., Nicholson turned himself in at Garfield Police Headquarters, the captain said.

He was being held on $10,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with an illegal weapons offense.
