Dog’s best friend: Our newest columnist

“Training is not about getting your dog to submit to your every command,” says our newest columnist, certified trainer Laura Garber, who considers training an exercise in building relationships rather than obedience.

“It’s about shaping your dog into a family member, one who can work, play, and travel by your side,” said Garber, of Hoboken, who’ll be writing a weekly “Woof Gang” column for CLIFFVIEWPILOT.COM.

Garber believes such an approach “promises greater understanding and symbiosis within our family packs.

“Timing, vocal intonation, and pace of training are all important components to efficient and thorough learning. Unfortunately, unintentional behaviors can develop due to poorly executed training.”
