The victim told police he was riding one-handed on a South Maple Street sidewalk, with food in his other hand, when he tried to steer between a trash can and a planter, lost his balance and fell into the roadway around 8:40 a.m.
Fortunately for him, a 58-year-old moving truck driver from Jersey City who was headed the cyclist’s way “saw him losing his balance and immediately slowed down,” Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward said.
The victim hit the side of the 28-foot truck, injuring his leg and leaving him with road rash on his side, the chief said.
“Luckily he didn’t go under the tires,” Ward said.
He was taken to The Valley Hospital.
