PUBLIC SAFETY: People who leave purses, electronics and other valuables in the open in their cars while working out have increasingly become targets for smash-and-grab thieves, local police are warning.

The car burglars have been trolling health and fitness clubs, smashing windows and taking whatever is in view, they said.

The Wyckoff YMCA was recently the site of two window-smashing burglaries.

“In both instances women’s purses that had been left on the seat inside of the car were stolen,” Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox said this morning.

Ridgewood police have reported similar instances the past couple of months, including one last week in which a Glen Rock woman working out at the New York Sports Club lost her purse and had to have her window repaired.

“Despite the car being locked, the window is shattered in seconds and the purse or other valuables inside are taken,” Fox warned. “To prevent against being a victim, items of value should not be left visible in the vehicle interior.”

If you must leave things in the car, lock them in the trunk, police say.
