Their late-model Dodge was found off the road at 3:50 a.m. on Route 3 east at the curve where the highway connects with Route 495 headed toward the Lincoln Tunnel, Lt. Christine Klag told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The vehicle was so destroyed it was barely recognizable, emergency workers at the scene said.

Some, if not all, of the occupants were ejected, they said.

Two were pronounced dead at the scene, and the third later died. A fourth was in critical condition at Jersey City Medical Center.

The fifth victim, also at the medical center, was expected to live, Klag said.

Ages of the victims range from 19 to early 30s, she said.

Hometowns have proven more difficult. One might not be from New Jersey, the lieutenant said.

Eastbound Route 3 near the crash site was shut down for roughly six hours. An investigation was continuing, Klag said.
