State legislators are negotiating a bill that would essentially charge a $2.50 daily bed tax to the state's 60 nonprofit hospitals, with most of the money going to towns, but some to the counties. But the bill is opposed by the League of Municipalities because it doesn't reflect the cost of town services to hospitals, said NorthJersey.com.
If approved by the state, $690,762 could be charged to Hackensack University Medical Center; $594,037 to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center; and $406,975 to The Valley Hospital. The state hospital association estimates that statewide, $21 million to $25 million could be generated by the nonprofit hospital assessment, NorthJersey.com reported.
