The Ohio Department of Agriculture found the listeria in Dole-branded Field Greens salad made in a processing center in Springfield, said the Centers for Disease Control.
The salads are also sold under the Dole, Fresh Selections, Simple Truth, Marketside, The Little Salad Bar and President's Choice brand names.
They can be identified by the letter "A" at the beginning of the manufacturing code found on the package, the centers asid.
There was no evidence that packaged salads from other Dole facilities have produced problems, the CDC said.
The fatal victim was from Michigan and the other infected came from New Jersey, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania.
"Although the investigation began in September 2015, the source of these illnesses wasn't known until January 2016 when the laboratory result from the packaged salad collected in Ohio linked the illnesses to the Dole processing facility in Springfield, Ohio," the CDC reported.
"On January 21, 2016, Dole reported to CDC that it had stopped all production at the processing facility in Springfield," the centers said. "The company also reported that it is withdrawing all packaged salads currently on the market that were produced at this facility.
"CDC recommends that consumers do not eat, restaurants do not serve, and retailers do not sell packaged salads produced at the Dole processing facility in Springfield, Ohio."
Listeria kills an estimated 260 people while hospitalizing 1,600 others, the centers reported. Most at risk are those with weakened immune systems -- very young children, the elderly and pregnant women.
It often contaminates fresh vegetables, cheese and ice cream, the CDC said.
