Bergen, Passaic: Heed These Tips During 'Life-Threatening' Arctic Blast

With temperatures expected to plummet below zero over the weekend -- with "life-threatening" wind chills that could hit 25-below -- authorities are urging citizens to heed safety tips to protect themselves.

Anyone who doesn't take proper precautions risks frostbite and hyopthermia.

The first wave of cold air arrived in New Jersey late Wednesday. Right behind it is an Arctic blast due Saturday.

Temperatures will begin to plummet toward zero in the afternoon, with the most dangerous period expected from 2 to 3 p.m. until around 4 a.m. Sunday.Emergency management officials urge you to consider:

Frozen pipes and overworked furnaces could leave houses without heat or running water;
Car batteries run the risk of dying;
Never venture outside without gloves, a hat, and several layers of clothing;
Run water at a trickle and keep cabinet doors open to prevent pipes from freezing;.
Never use a stove/oven to heat a home or an open flame to melt frozen pipes -- it could start a fire;
Be sure that vehicles have a winter safety kit that includes a blanket, warm clothes and gloves;
Take extra steps to keep pets warm;
