Ridgewood Fashion Expert: Confidence Is Cool Going Back To School

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Mary O’Reilly of Ridgewood has one message when it comes to back-to-school fashion:

“If it feels good, it looks good,” said the GLOW owner. “You have to own it.”

Daily Voice caught up with O’Reilly for the scoop on the hottest trends for the cooler weather.

Distressed denim paired with a flannel button down— the grunge look — is very in, and is “super cool” for adults too, she said.

Bigger than the baggy pants that recently hit the shelves are emojis.

“They’re everywhere,” O’Reilly said. “On hats, pants, backpacks — you name it. It’s whimsical, comical and fun.

“Everyone relates to each other with emojis — peace signs and smiley faces,” she said.

The chocker necklaces of the 1990s are starting to make their comeback.

“In any picture you’ll see of a fall lok there is a little choker,” she said, whether it be a simple, black string or stacking those colorful intricate plastic ones (thanks, Lizzie McGuire!).

But it’s still hot outside, O’Reilly pointed out. Which means that really, back-to-school shopping doesn’t have to happen right away. Wearing summer clothing can even help kids ease out of summer and into the flow of the school year.

“You can do back-to-school shopping in November,” she said. “That’s the season when it really hits weather-wise.”

Denny’s Childrenswear and Garage, both in Paramus, are the stores that O’Reilly recommends for the hottest trends that won’t break the bank. She also suggests shopping locally at stores like Eat Your Spinach and Savvy Chic for those conversation pieces that not many other people will have.

O’Reilly stressed the importance of the “Three C’s” — cool, comfortable and cute.

If it’s not comfortable, it’s not going to be cute. Being yourself, she said, that’s what’s cool for going back to school.
