Abma fell in love with community news at an early age, when a local newspaper published a picture of her in the preschool playground. She’s been hooked ever since.

She got her start as a reporter as a stringer for Paramus Post-Review before serving as editor of North Jersey Media Group’s Shopper News (now the Community News and Gazette), which covers 14 towns in Bergen and Passaic counties.

She also worked for Patch before starting a local news site for her hometown in Midland Park.

In 2014, Abma met and partnered with Jerry DeMarco of Cliffview Pilot fame to expand the Midland Park Press to cover all of Northwest Bergen County, with an eye toward eventually covering all of Bergen and Passaic counties. Unfortunately, the project stalled when it ran out of funding.

“The Daily Voice model incorporates many of the ideas Jerry and I discussed, and more,'' Abma said. "I am very impressed with the Daily Voice’s technology and business model — the main shortcoming of Midland Park Press and Northwest Bergen Press — and am excited for the future of hyperlocal news, not only in my community but for people across the country.”

Founded in 2010, Daily Voice is the largest news medium in Westchester and Fairfield counties.
