Born in Ridgewood on Oct. 12, 1954, Carlisle got a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina and his law degree from the UCLA School of Law. He began his career as a deputy prosecutor for city and county of Honolulu.
He spent more than a decade in that role, before moving to private practice for eight years. Carlisle then ran for prosecuting attorney and won -- four times.
He then ran for mayor of Honolulu in 2010, in a special election to finish Mufi Hannemann's term, when the latter resigned in order to run for governor. Carlisle won that election.
He also ran in the regular elections for mayor in 2012 and 2016, but lost in the primary election for both.
