Ridgewood Library Kicks Off Reading Marathon Month

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- The Friends of the Ridgewood Library is sponsoring its annual Reading Marathon Fundraiser during the month of February.

The Marathon, which encourages participation from students in pre-school through middle school, helps foster a love of reading while raising valuable funds for the Library to purchase books, media, and fund educational arts and science programs such as the Reel Voices Film Festival, Summer Reading Club, Annual Teen Photo Contest and Museum Passes. 

New this year is a special Reading Marathon kick-off event for middle school students that will be held on Sunday, Jan. 31 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The“Edible Book Festival” invites students select a book and bake a cake that interprets their book selection. 

The Reading Marathon kick-off event for preschool and elementary students will be held on Monday, Feb. 1 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature “Up, Up and Away”, a fun and interactive session with Mad Science. 

A musical event with “UniBeat Drum Circle” is planned for Wednesday, March 2 from 4p.m. to 5 p.m. as well. 

Finally, the preschool awards ceremony will be held on Friday, April 8 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Ice cream cakes donated by Ben & Jerry’s will be served at the closing event and Preschool ceremony. 

This year, all preschool students who read 9 or more books will earn a Gold Medal.

All elementary students who submit a parent-signed form by the March 2, 2016 deadline will receive a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream coupon, a special classroom incentive, and lastly, bonus book money for their school library.

Middle school students who read 750 pages and return parent-signed forms by March 2 have a chance to win one of 30 raffle items.
