Several local rescues are giving those animals a better life with the help of fosters and adopters.

Below and above are some animals who need "fur-ever" homes.

A Pathway To Hope - North Haledon

  • Jude: Jude — a former bait dog — was thought to be dying when he was recovered by police from a Paterson dog fighting ring in 2015. On his way to the animal hospital, though, Jude sat up and began licking the officer's hand. The officer called A Pathway To Hope who rehabilitated Jude and found him a foster home. Jude is great with kids but can be dog selective. He is known to be "a big mush."
  • Calista: Calista was brought to the Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital on New Years when neighbors found her emaciated and wandering the streets of Paterson. Calista, now craving love and attention, is in a temporary foster home getting all the love and attention she needs, and undergoing testing to determine the extent of the damage to her body.

Rescue Dogs Rock - NYC

  • Sugar and Spice: Brother and sister sugar and spice are meant to go together. The 6-month-old lab mixes are crate and house trained and love kids and other dogs.
  • Eloise: This boxer-pit bull mix loves to cuddle, yet waits and waits for her forever home. She is 1 year old and is great with all other animals and young children. She loves to play with toys and can do that by herself for hours.

Southern Paws - Ramsey

  • Sasha: Sasha she is a 5-month-old husky-collie mix. She needs to go to a home with people who have husky experience, without cats. Sasha is friendly and sweet. She is a big snuggle and loves to give kisses.
  • Lani: Lani is a 7-month-old lab-boxer mix who loves everyone and everything. She is great with kids dogs and cats, and is already house-broken. She has been with the rescue since October and is desperate for a loving home.

Grateful Doggies - Fair Lawn

  • King: 1-year-old King was a roadside puppy in rural Georgia, dumped along with his litter-mates. He was nursed back to health and adopted in Rhode Island only to be turned in to a shelter for no apparent reason. He's a wonderful hound mix that's eager to please and great with people, kids and other dogs.
  • Ziggy: Ziggy is a "personality plus dog." He's a bulldog basset hound mix about 3 years old. Ziggy is a great family dog that loves to play and also to just lay his head on your lap.
