Quayyan R. Horton, 36, of Jersey City; Charles E. Kirkland, 36, of Newark; Nafee A. Horton, 33, of Newark; and Hakeem J. Jones, 30, of East Orange, were taken into custody following a months-long investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Hackensack Police Department, Prosecutor Mark Musella said Thursday, Feb. 20.
The shooting happened on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 6:10 p.m. in the area of Newman Street, authorities said. A large group of people had gathered when two vehicles drove up and multiple shots were fired, prosecutors said. A parked car was struck by bullets, but no injuries were reported, officials said.
Investigators identified both vehicles involved, linking one to Quayyan R. Horton and the other to an associate of Charles E. Kirkland, prosecutors said. Authorities later determined the four men were among five people responsible for the shooting, Musella said.
On Friday, Feb. 14, detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Hackensack Police arrested Horton, Kirkland, and Nafee Horton at separate residences in Jersey City and Newark, officials said. A search of Quayyan Horton’s home led to the seizure of an illegal, unregistered handgun, authorities said.
Jones, who was already incarcerated at the Essex County Jail on an unrelated charge, was served with additional charges on Wednesday, Feb. 19, Musella said.
Each of the four men faces charges of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, third-degree criminal mischief, and fourth-degree aggravated assault, prosecutors said.
Authorities are still working to identify a fifth suspect and ask anyone with information to contact the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at (201) 226-5532.
