RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Not eating or eating too little does nothing to support losing weight.

While exercise is important to a healthy lifestyle, diet and proper eating are more successful in achieving weight loss goals, experts say.

In fact, it may even lower a person's metabolism and prevent them from dropping pounds, experts say.

Not eating actually "lowers your metabolism," said Suzanne Peiffer, a registered dietician in New Jersey. Why? "You need food to be digested to increase your metabolism," she said,

Peiffer will present "Not on an Empty Stomach — Losing Weight Without Feeling Hungry" Wednesday, July 20 at the Ridgewood Library.

The focus of her talk will be on ways to lose weight in a healthy way while not feeling hungry.

"My approach will be to to give tips to develop healthy eating habits. I'll talk about how diets don't work, especially if you're not eating enough," she told Daily Voice. "Eating is important but so is portion control."

Making healthy food selections, and choices, as well as planning meals ahead of time before eating out, are some of her suggestions.

"When eating out, there are astronomical portions served in restaurants so I suggest looking at the menu online before you go. Also, sharing an entree helps with portion control, and so does choosing an appetizer and salad over a (main course). And choices to make could be alcohol or dessert, not having both," Peiffer said.
